Missing alarms because no sound is made

Recently I have been missing task alarms because there is no longer a sound associated with them - the on-screen dialogue box presents on the screen but there is no sound, even though the iPhone volume is high. The frustrating thing is they used to work fine so I guess I've managed to inadvertently set something OR it's a bug in a software update.
