keep syncing but have Dropbox backup (logged)

Postby SaraM » Tue Nov 29, 2011 2:56 am

Those of us lucky enough to have an iPhone 4s have to keep iCloud as our sync method with 2Do if we want to keep the amazing ability to add tasks with Siri, so the new Dropbox sync option isn't useful for us, as far as I can tell.

BUT, it would be WONDERFUL if the backup options could be changed to allow us to use Dropbox as an automatic backup system. We would enter our dropbox account, and set the options as to how often to back up to dropbox (launch or exit, or maybe options like once a day or once a week). The reason it would be so valuable is that the iCloud synching does not do a full backup of the 2do settings, calendar colours, setup up etc. And currently the only way to have secure full backups on off of the iOS device is to remember to manually email the backup file to ourselves.

Anyway, love 2do, whether this happens or not! :)

I agree. I mean I don't have an iphone 4S but I would like to be able to back up to dropbox.

Recently when I upgraded the ios5 onto my iphone / ipod and ipad for some reason it could only happen by completely reinstalling everything which meant I lost my 2Do database. Stupid of me not to email the database to myself I know but I have so many apps it was just a case of going for it and figuring out which apps I "lost"afterwards. As far as the 2Do database was concerned I had several backups, but these were stored of course on the Ipad/pod/phone themselves.

So of course I was gutted to discover after the upgrades that I had lost everything. The good news is that several weeks later I came across the database on my pc - I must have emailed it to myself back in June this year as a test and saved the database attachment directly on my pc - all I had to figure out how I could get it back to my ipad. So I just emailed it back to myself and opened the email on my ipad and clicked on the attachement and hey presto I got my database back! I bit old but definitely something I can work with.

That got me wondering why you couldnt back up to somewhere like dropbox. Makes sense that the backup should be stored "offline".

Thanks guys.

Yes that's a good point! We can look into this as a 'separate backup' feature. We could theoretically backup a copy of the actual database (instead of the meta-data that we sync otherwise when you select Dropbox Sync as an option) to your dropbox account which could later be retrieved.

If I may expand on this suggestion just a bit, I'd like to suggest that it would be nice to have my calendar configuration (smart calendars, color & arrangement) synced between my devices while STILL having the convenience of iCloud (Siri, iCloud Web App and iCal on the Desktop).

Why not sync 2Do's Metadata about calendar configuration via Dropbox while STILL syncing the tasks themselves over iCloud? This would give us the best of both worlds! Proper 2Do sync PLUS all the benefits of iCloud. Would something like this be possible?

I realize syncing calendar configuration over iCloud is impossible. That's precisely the reason why I proposed such a "hybrid" solution: Calendar Configuration on Dropbox and the tasks themselves on iCloud. I can't imagine a technical restriction with this proposal, aside from the effort to develop it.

Thanks for the follow-up. I guess I won't get my hopes up then.

On the other hand, I've read elsewhere in this forum about the possibility of a native Mac App.
Perhaps I can pin my hopes on that instead. :)
